Since June 2023, Gerard Ee has been running weekly Non-Violent Communication (NVC) classes in Singapore.
Developed by Marshall Rosenberg, Non-Violent Communication or NVC is a way of communicating that bridges differences and builds relationships. It helps us develop an awareness of both our own and others' feelings and needs. From there, we learn to make clear, actionable requests for connection or support.
As a Certified Trainer in NVC via Somatic Consensus, Gerard teaches NVC with an embodied approach, which means learning to listen not just with your head but with your whole body.
Through a mix of hands-on practice, group discussions, and guided exercises, you’ll learn how to:
Express yourself authentically, without triggering defensiveness
Listen deeply to others, even in tough situations
Handle conflict with calm and compassion
Build relationships based on mutual understanding
The sessions are open to anyone who wants to improve how they relate to others, whether at work, at home, or in the world.
Curious about what Gerard's Non-Violent Communication sessions are like? Here is a sample of past classes.
During this NVC class, we prepared garlic bread in class as a way to identify and connect with sensations resulting from the experience. During this Somatic Food Practice, we practised noticing what triggered our bodily sensations, describing the resulting feelings, and identifying our needs and values.
After doing simple somatic movement exercises to ground ourselves, this class was conducted as a small-group discussion. We explored the idea of fundamental human needs and unpacked personal scenarios using that lens. The exercise helped us reframe human needs in a holistic way, breaking free of traditional hierarchical frameworks.
At this off-site session, the class practised somatic NVC by the simple act of mindful walking. We became aware of our breathing, our movements, the effects of being surrounded by nature, and even the sensations of discomfort as the walk progressed. We came away with a newfound appreciation of the mind-body connection.
